I'm with you on the dual clutch. But single clutch belongs near the bottom, imho. In this day and age torque converter autos are improving shift speed while remaining unbeaten in smoothness. Single clutches only excel at one thing: wfo shifting. Every once in awhile you just wanna relax, a task at which they are hopeless.

But to be fair, it's still better than an auto.

Here is my list:
1. Externally Gated Manuél
2. Internally Gated Manuél
3. Single clutch robotized Manuél
4. DCT
5. Slushbox
6. Single gear
7. CVT
Not on list: column vs. floor or # of gears. That would take too long to get into with everything else I listed

Well of course, that depends on how you perceive better here. Are they faster? Arguable with the shift speeds gotten from today's top full autos, but sure a single clutch is faster, marginally. Better at shifting smoothly in around town driving? Not even close. Auto kills single clutch. I'd take a ZF 8 speed over an older single clutch Ferrari transmission any day.

I'd still take the single clutch. There's a huge amount to be said for having actual control over it and you actually being needed in the shifting process.

Ehem,
1) MY MANUAL (Toyota W56)

The Cotal and its pre-selector cousins shouldn't be forgotten. I do like the floor shifted manual transmission the most but the next ones will be the Cotal and the pre-selector boxes.
Here's a Cotal shifter (with a black knob) in '38 Delage. The lever on the floor with the transparent knob is the direction changing lever.

I'd have to put it:
1) Paddle-shifted sequential
2) Any other sequential
3) Manual, floor
4) Manual, column
5) Auto, floor (particularly if selectable)
6) Auto, dash/column
7) others
Unless you've got paddles, the shifter belongs on the floor... that's just where it goes. The only reason not to put it on the floor is if you actually have a seat there or else the floor is too far away to be practical (van).
